Omissions of Censorship
We look for ways and places where forms of censorship are recognized. We examine the process of censorship as prohibition and manipulation, but also as a potential means or condition of
or condition of exchange and communication. We explore the establishment of censor-censored relations, instances of self-censorship or immunity. We locate censorship in our everyday practices and raise questions about its limits and necessity. Although ‘censorship’ is usually identified with powers to prohibit ‘speech’, it is a process that also systematically involves ‘things’, ‘bodies’ and ‘materials’, which actively participate in the control and restrictive interventions that shape it. In this sense, we reflect on and experiment with the (re)mixes, (re)juxtapositions of things, discourses, bodies, ideas, and materials in order to highlight the multiple and often unpredictable ways in which they control and monitor, intervene, constrain, and ultimately constitute the process of censorship.
Our reserach ultimately takes on a printed form, as printed publications have historically been an emblematic field of censorship. Each of us intervened in a complementary, editorial or even censorial way in the contributions of the others. The publication was distributed at the conference site, with the desire to serve as a trigger for reflection, discussion or even friction with the participants.
